Indonesian Institute of Sciences researcher Siti Zuhro has recommended the 1965 Blasphemy Law be revised but not revoked.
Testifying as an expert at a Constitutional Court hearing of the judicial review request of the law, Siti said Wednesday the hearings “should produce a win-win solution”.<>
“It would be wrong not to [do anything about] the law because we have heard relevant arguments [from petitioners]...,” she added.
The Court held its 10th hearing of the judicial review request of the 1965 Blasphemy Law, filed by petitioners of NGOs and self-proclaimed backers of pluralism in October last year.
They asked the Court to review several contentious articles they said discriminated against certain religious groups, particularly minorities.
She said she would not recommend abolishing the law.
“My experience as a researcher and team member tasked with revising the [regional autonomy law] has given me a thorough understanding of the history of Indonesia’s politics, our culture and the behavior of our actors, including institutions in the country and I have come to the conclusion that we need to revise this law, but not revoke it,” she said.
When the 1999 Regional Autonomy Law was repealed, she said, “the magnitude of the impact was extreme andthere was a huge price to pay for that policy”. (jp/dar)
