Four Indonesian cabinet ministers are to resign soon following their election as members of the House of Representatives (DPR) for the 2009-2014 period.
Minister/State Secretary Hatta Radjasa said here on Tuesday the four ministers who would resign are minister of culture and tourism Jero Wacik, state minister for administrative reform Taufik Effendy, minister for development of backward regions, Lukman Edy, and minister of cooperatives, small-and medium-sized businesses Suryadharma Ali.<>
Hatta said he had received confirmation from only two of them namely Taufik Effendy and Jero Wacik, adding confirmation from the others would follow.
Hatta said because of the resignations, the government would appoint interim ministers to replace them until the new cabinet was formed.
"Certainly there would be interim ministers who would serve for the last ten days until the new cabinet is formed," he was quoted by Antaranews agency as saying.
Based on the results of the legislative elections in April this year six ministers had been elected as legislative members namely minister of youths and sports Adhyaksa Dault from the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) for Central Sulawesi, state minister for administrative reform Taufik Effendy from the Democratic Party for South Kalimantan, minister of culture and tourism Jero Wacik from the Democratic Party for Bali, minister of fisheries and marine resources Freddy Numberi from the Democratic Party for Papua, minister for development of backward regions Lukman Edy from the Nation`s Awakening Party for Riau and minister of cooperatives and small-and medium-businesses Suryadharma Ali from the United Development Party for West Java.
Because the new DPR members would be inaugurated on October 1 the ministers that had been elected as DPR members should choose whether they would remain or resign before that date.
Adhyaksa Dault and Freddy Numberi have chosen to stay and lose the opportunity to become DPR members. They chose to remain as ministers until the end of their term on October 20, 2009.
Hatta said that no intervention from President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono with regard to their decision.
He said until now President Yudhoyono had not promised anyone a seat in the new cabinet. (dar)
