Some of the works of famed German poet Johann Wolfgang Goethe are to be recited at an Islamic boarding school in Tegalrejo, Magelang district, by a German literary academic, Berthold Damshauser, on February 25.
"Damshauser is to visit Tegalrejo`s Asrama Perguruan Islam (API) Islamic boarding school as part of a tour of several Central Java cities , namely Kudus, Semarang, Solo and Magelang. From Central Java he will go to Denpasar, Bali," the chairwoman of the "Dialog on the Works of Goethe, West-Islam Dialog Pioneer" Committee, Dorothea Rosa Herliany, said here Saturday.<>
Dorothea said Goethe was a pioneer of Islam-West dialogs and his works were fit for reciting at the API Islamic boarding school. Goethe was also a highly respected poet in Germany and his name had been immortalized in the name of German cultural centers around the world.
"Western views on the Islamic world can be gleaned from his poems," she said.
At the February 25 event, Damhauser would recite at least 10 of Goethe`s poems such as "Preamble to Diwan", "Word of the Prophet", "Is the Qur`an Eternal", "Human Boundaries", and "King Mambang", in German and Indonesian alternately.
Berthold Damshauser is a professor of Indonesian literature at Bonn University in Germany and married to an Indonesian woman. He has translated many Indonesian poems into German and vice versa.
Damshauser recently completed translations of Goethe`s poems into Indonesian and published them in book form.
He had also transalted the works of other German literary figures such as Bertholt Brecht, Paul Celan, Hans Magnus Enzensberger and Rainer Maria Rilke.
"The poetry recital at API Islamic Boarding School will be a continuation of his work in publishing translated German poetry. He publishes each collection of a every poet`s works he has translated," Dorothea said.
Damshauser had also translated several poems of Nietzsche into Indonesian and would publish them in September 2010.
He was born in Wanne-Eickel (Germany) on February 8, 1957, studied German and Indonesian literature at the University of Koln, Germany, and completed his thesis on Indonesian author Trisno Sumardjo in 1983.
He then continued his postgraduate studies at the Indonesian and Javanese literature departments of the University of Indonesia, Jakarta in 1984.
In 1997, Damshauser cofounded the Commission for Indonesia-German Language and Literature under the auspices of the Indonesian president and German chancellor. (ant/dar)
