The government should not hesitate to declare the outpouring mudflow in East Java district of Sidoarjo a national disaster, United Regional Party (PPD) secretary general Adhie Massardi said here on Friday.
He noted that the flow of hot mud since last May should be declared a national disaster because it has submerged thousands of hectares of agricultural land, villages and industries, and forced more than 13,000 people to flee their homes.
<>"The steaming mud flow in Sidoarjo is a natural disaster which seems impossible to overcome, Adhie Massardi said in a function to explain the report of Sidoarjo Mud Monitoring Team which was established by the party. He said impossibility to deal with the advancing sea of the hot mud was also supported by a number of geologists from various national univestities such as the University of Trisakti in Jakarta, the University of Diponegoro in Semarang, and the University of Airlangga in Surabya.
Therefore, the United Regional Party urged the government to immediately declare the mudflow a national disaster.
"To do this, the government has to explain the real situation in Sidoarjo to the House of Representatives (DPR) because to make such a declaration means that the government will be fully involved in the handling of the mud," Adhie Massardi noted as reported by Antara. (dar)
