General chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) KH Hasyim Muzadi has publicly explained why he took sides with former vice president Jusuf Kalla in last year’s presidential election.

“Pak Jusuf Kalla has made a Rp 100 million donation per month for NU since he was the vice president. He has consistently given the donation,” Hasyim said in his accountability speech to a national leadership conference of the nation’s largest mass Muslim organization on Wednesday night. />
“Pak Jusuf Kalla has also given his annual alms worth some Rp 3 billion to NU members. But the alms are not paid in cash but in the form of basic commodity packages,” he was quoted by The Jakarta Post as saying.

“Had he become president, how much donations he would have given to NU,” Hasyim said to the applause of thousands of conference participants in Makassar, South Sulawesi.

Hasyim has widely been accused by his critics from within and outside the NU of politicizing the mass Muslim organization when he allegedly threw NU’s support for the pairing of Kalla-Wiranto in the 2009 presidential election.

“But I was blamed by people for helping [Kalla in the presidential race] and accused of politicizing the NU,” he said, responding to the allegations.

Despite support from Hasyim, Kalla lost the presidential election to the pairing of incumbent President Susilo Bambang and Boediono. The defeat dealt an embarrassing blow to Hasyim’s faction in the NU.

NU ulema were divided over which candidates they had to support in the latest presidential election. Some landed backing for Yudhoyono and others for Kalla and their rival candidates.

Hasyim also drew a harsh attack by his critics when gave support for the nomination of former women’s empowerment minister Khofifah Indarparawansa as East Java governor in 2008.

In the 2004 presidential election, Hasyim became running mate for presidential candidate Megawati Soekarnoputri. The move also earned him a strong criticism from within the NU, which is not allowed to play practical politics.

Hasyim went on to say the NU executive board needs some Rp 250 million for its monthly operational costs, Rp 100 million of which was covered by Kalla’s monthly donation.

“Some Rp 50 million of the operational costs are taken from benefits from the Rp 5 billion donation made for NU under the name of then president Megawati Soekarnoputri,” he said, adding the money was delivered by former industry minister Rini Suwandi under the Megawati administration.

Hasyim said the remaining deficit of Rp 100 million in the operational cost was covered from NU’s coffers worth some Rp 6.7 billion.

In his accountability report, Hasyim admitted that the NU faced serious challenges in executing its commitment to khittah (the organization’s national consensus to stay away of practical politics), as all political parties always dragged it into politics.

“Those who want the NU not to play a political role are those who have political parties that want to grab support from NU,” he argued.

Shortly after hearing Hasyim’s accountability speech, the entire 33 NU provincial branches accepted the report.

Hasyim took only about 30 minutes to deliver the report Wednesday night.

Afterward, the NU conference organizing committee chief Hafidz Utsman asked all the audience if Hasyim’s report could be accepted. “Yes!” the participants chanted.

Earlier on Wednesday, a legislator from the National Awakening Party (PKB), also a younger sister of former president KH Abdurrahman Wahid, Lily Wahid, said Hasyim had made significant improvements for NU despite some problems with his political moves.

“Under Pak Hasyim’s chairmanship, NU has become more prominent in the global arena."

“As you can see dozens of muftis (Muslim jurist experts in the religious law) come to attend the congress. That could happen because of Pak Hasyim’s excellent international relationship building,” Lily said.

The session to respond to Hasyim’s accountability report was originally scheduled on Thursday.

As the report was accepted earlier than the schedule, the whole conference agenda may be sped up to wrap up the meeting earlier.

The election of NU new chairman may be held before the original schedule on Saturday night. (dar)
