The General Chairman of the country’s largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) KH Hasyim Muzadi called on those whose responsibility in handling Lapindo mudflow not to trouble its settlement.

Hasyim said the government and related circles should also prioritize mudflow victims’ needs.<>

The leader of Islamic Boarding “Pesantren” School Al Hikam Malang suggested that there were such difficulties in overcoming the mudflow disaster due to there was one serving as a minister.

The hot mud has been flowing on the surface since May 29 when a PT Lapindo Brantas Inc. well being drilled in the Sidoarjo area developed a leak

Lapindo is indirectly controlled by PT Energi Mega Persada Tbk, partly owned by the Bakrie Group, which is controlled by the family of the welfare minister.

Lapindo, which has been told to pay $425m in compensation for mud victims and on efforts to stop the flow, has also separately denied it has done anything wrong. (ant/rif)
