Indonesia’s largest Muslim organization Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) leader Hasyim Muzadi expressed hope here recently that the Presidential Advisory “Wantimpres” Council would really play an effective role.
"We hope the Wantimpres will provide good advices to the president and also hear and accept advices from the people," Muzadi said at his office here over the weekend.<>
He said Wantimpres should play an effective role so that it would not leave the impression that it was set up merely to meet a legal requirement.
Besides Hasyim Muzadi, political scientist of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) Dr Hermawan Sulistio called on the presidential advisors to focus their attention on their main and urgent tasks, rather than on the amendment of the 1954 Constitution.
Sulistio made the remarks in response to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s instruction last Friday that the would-be members of the Presidential Advisory Council should provide considerations on whether or not the Constitution needed to be amended for the fifth time.
"I share the view that Wantimpres should first provide its advices on urgent issues such strategic concept on how Indonesia could get rid of economic crisis," Sulistio said as quoted by the Antara news agency.
In the meantime, Governor of the National Defense Institute (Lemhanas) Prof Dr Muladi said it would be better for the government to consider the amendment of the Consitution after the implementation of the general elections in 2009.
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono established the Wantimpres on March 26 and has selected nine people from various disciplines and backgrounds to serve as its members.
The president is scheduled to install nine members of Presidential Advisory Council (Wantimpres) at the State Palace here at 2 p.m. on Wednesday.
The installment was originally scheduled for Tuesday but presidential spokesman Andi Malarangeng said it was postponed due to the absence of one of the Wantimpres members.
Before the installment on Wednesday afternoon, President Yudhoyono was also scheduled to receive Manpower and Transmigration Minister Erman Suparman and Industry Minister Fachmi Idris at 11 a.m., and the organiser of Jati Diri Foundation an hour after that.
The nine members of Wantimpres are Adnan Buyung Nasution, Emil Salim, Randy A Gani, Subur Budi Santoso, Ma’ruf Amin, TB Silalahi, Rachmawati Soekarnoputri, Ali Alatas and Dr Syahrir. (dar)
