House of Representatives approves Public Information Law

The House of Representatives officially passed the Public Information bill Thursday at a plenary session, lead by House deputy speaker Muhaimin Iskandar.

The contentious draft law, which had been tabled for nine years, was finally passed after the government conveyed their final position. Communications and Information Minister M. Nuh, Justice and Human Rights Minister Andi Matalatta and House factions represented the government.<>

The National Awakening Party faction was the only one to voice dissension over the law, which is to be implemented in two years. Antara reported.

The chairman of the House's Commission I for defense, information, foreign and political affairs, Theo Sambuaga, said they discussed a change in the draft law's title from the "Access to Attain Public Information Law" to the"Public Information Law".

The 10 original chapters were also expanded into 13 and five articles were added, totaling 64.

According to Nuh, the government would organize the necessary legal infrastructure, technicalities and publicity measures during the two-year implementation period. (dar)
