Deputy Chairman of Commission VIII of the House of Representatives Gondo Radityo Gambiro said the commission will soon agree on the cost of hajj pilgrimage (BPIH) to prevent a long delay of this year`s pilgrimage.
"The House and the government have yet to reach agreement on the BPIH in view of difference in view," Gondo Radityo Gambiro said in Jakarta Monday.<<>br />
Gondo said that until the consultations had been concluded, the government said it may lower the BPIH by 36 US dollars from the initially proposed 3,577 dollars.
But most members of the House commission asked the House to lower the BPIH by 100 US dollars, and some even by 120 dollars.
Gondo said that he quite understood why the government insisted to lower 36 dollars, because of its years of experience in holding the hajj pilgrimage.
Especially, he said, that in this year`s pilgrimage more Indonesian pilgrims have their lodgings within ring-one, not more than four kilometers from the main mosque in Mecca.
"Last year only 27 percent of Indonesian pilgrims were within ring-one, and the rest in ring-two and ring-three, the farthest seven kilometers from the mosque in Mecca," the House member of the Democratic Party faction said.
In this year`s hajj pilgrimage the government has made a contract that 63 percent of the pilgrims will be within ring-one.
Lodgings in ring-one will cost more than those in ring-two and ring-three.
"We understand this. But we also hoped the government would still lower the BPIH by 36 to 100 US dollars, and still respecting assumptions used by the government," he said as quoted by Antara news agency.
He said if the shortage in the cost of lodgings could be subsidized with the optimizing fund, as long as it is not too significant.
Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali has said earlier that he had made overall calculations and found that the BPIH could be lowered by 36 US dollars.
If the BPIH is lowered further, he said, it would be difficult because the shortage would have to be subsidized with the optimizing fund.
Suryadharma said the government may always lower the BPIH by up to 100 dollars, but the consequence would be that the proposal for next year`s BPIH would be an increase.
Suryadharma pointed out that in organizing the hajj pilgrimage the government will stick to the non-profit basis, not the other around.
"Any excess of this year`s BPIH will be saved in the optimizing fund of the previous year`s hajj pilgrimage," he said. (dar)
