Indonesia should play active role in halal certification, says VP

Indonesia should play an active role in the determination of international halal certification standards, Vice President Boediono said here on Friday.
Speaking at a function to open a Business Exhibition and Indonesian Halal Products 2010, the vice president said a lot of products and services were being traded in the globalization era.<<>br />
"Therefore, Indonesia as the largest Muslim country in the world should play an active role as a potential market for various products and services with halal labels," the vice president said as quoted by Antara news agency.
He said the products and services of a country to be sold in international markets were no longer restricted by tight import duties or taxes but by their international halal certification standards.
"What a pity it would be if Indonesian products and services fail to enter other countries` markets just because of their failure to meet halal standards," the vice president said.
Therefore, he said, Indonesia should play an active role , strive to have a say in the determination of international halal certification standards in global trade.
The vice president was certain that Indonesia would be able to play a active role in the adoption of international halal certification standards such as had been formulated by the Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI).
"Through exhibitions like this one and based on what has already been done so far, I am certain that Indonesia will be able to be a front runner in the adoption of international halal certification standards," the vice president said.
On the occasion, MUI Chairman Amidhan said Indonesia already had stationed halal certification personnel in a number of countries such as Japan, Australia, Canada, and some European countries.
"Thus all products and commodities from those countries are safe for consumption because they have gone through tight examination procedures and quarantines before entering the domestic market," Amidhan said. (dar)
