Indonesia’s students of nahdliyin studying abroad especially in Middle East countries are expected to focus on matters dealing with both civilization and history. This is necessary to hasten pesantren’s weaknesses related to the importantly disciplines.

The statement above was said by the Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) for Middle East Affairs KH Said Aqil Siradj (Kang Said) to Libya and Syria’s NU students spending summer holiday at PBNU Building, Jakarta, Saturday (22/7).

Kang Said said pesantrens have so far focused on studying tafsir (Qur’anic exegesis), hadis (Prophet’s tradition), nahwu shorof (language), and so forth.

“Studying on hadlarah/tamaddun (civilization) and history is very little in ours. Also, studying on literature. We need to study books that have not been taught here (Indonesia) and there (Middle East),” Kang Said said referring to role of Middle East’s libraries.

At the same time, he criticized the tendency of Indonesia’s students studying in Egypt in particular, and gathering actively with their “own” friends. He argued that the Indonesian students need to associate with other foreign students from entirely Islamic countries all over the world or with social surroundings.

“I personally associate with anybody till I know more Arab jokes from Islamic countries,” Kang Said added.

He also regretted Indonesian students who could no longer speak Arabic after coming back to their country. (nam)
