The Indonesian Muslim Students Movement (PMII) expected the NU  32nd congress which will be held in Makassar on 22-27 March to be  such a new sheet for the religious social organization in keeping up  with the dynamics of change in the country.

"The (NU) 32nd congress in Makassar should be a new sheet for  NU to reveal its existence in guarding the dynamics of change that  continues to happen," the PMII functionary Abdul Basir Laupe said  here Friday.<>

PMII expected the Nahdliyin-based organization to stay committed to  dealing with intellectual tradition and pay no more attention to the   political dynamics.

"It is not realized, slowly but surely, that the political problems have  made NU lose its strategic roles. Thus, NU has no longer been a  determining factor," he said.

He said that PMII itself had so far attempted to organizationally restore its synergistic ties with  NU. PMII wanted to play significant  roles in preparing and supplying the needs of NU cadres.

"All this is intended to be an instrument for the PMII movements in supporting any NU big agenda both intensely and militantly," he said.

Organizationally, PMII has separated itself from NU since 1973. The PMII congress has now decided to be an independent organization and its independence has been implemented since 1971.

In terms of the much-awaited NU congress, PMII will hold an open  discussion taking up issues on the importance of NU in playing its important roles both nationally and globally on Sunday (14 / 3).

The discussion will be attended by some NU general chairman candidates such as Slamet Effendy Yusuf, H Ahmad Bagdja, KH Masdar Farid Mas'udi, KH Said Aqil Siradj, KH. Ali Maschan Moesa, KH Salahuddin Wahid, and Andi Jamaro Dulung. (mkf)
