The Indonesian Ulema Council (MUI) Tuesday issued an edict declaring infotainment forbidden (haram) to those showing, viewing and benefiting from disgrace, gossip and other matters related to privacy.

The council issued the edict on the second day of its 8th national congress at the Jakarta Convention Center here. The three-day congress will end on July 28.<<>br />
In his opening address to the congress on Sunday, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono asked ulema to help improve the morality of some Indonesian people, hoping the country would make progress in all aspects of life, including their moral value.

"I sincerely hope that ulema will always be in the forefront of the struggle to rescue the morality, etiquette and characters of our nation," the President was quoted by Antara news agency as saying. (dar)
