After being in uncertainty during the past few days, Indonesian Muslims will finally end the Ramadan fasting month and celebrate Idul Fitri festivities on Sunday, the government has announced.
The Religious Affairs Ministry during a meeting with mainstream Islamic groups, including Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) — the largest Muslim organizations in Indonesia, and Muhammadiyah determined Saturday that the end of Ramadhan be on Sunday<>.
Religious Affairs Minister said during the meeting that both astronomical calculations ( hisab) and moon sightings observation (rukyah) has confirmed the date .
Muhammadiyah, the country’s second largest Muslim organization, has set Sunday (Sept. 20) as this year’s Idul Fitri date based on its own hisab.
Teams from NU and other major groups deployed in several parts across the country for moon sightings observation reported they have seen the new moon on Saturday afternoon. (jp/dar)
