Chairman of the advisory board of the Indonesian largest Muslim organization Nadhatul Ulama (NU), KH Hasyim Muzadi, said that while Ahmadiyah deviated from Islamic teachings, the people should not take the law on their own hands.

"Violence should not be taken against them because followers of an ideology would became even more militants once they face physical pressures," Hasyim said in his SMS text message to Antara news agency here on Sunday. />
He and former president of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) Nur Mahmudi are now in Saudi Arabia to attend the annual meeting and the 50th anniversary celebration of the international Islamic organization Robithoh Alam Islamy.

Hasyim said that it was clear that Ahmadiyah deviated from the Islamic teaching commonly adopted by the majority of the Muslim community in the world, because Ahmadiyah believed the presence of a prophet after the Prophet Muhammad. In the Islamic teaching, Muhammad is the last prophet.

Muslim hardliners and Muhammadiyah followers were involved in violent clash recently in Manis Lor village, 40 km south of Cirebon city in West Java.

The attackers demanded Ahmadiyah followers cease all religious activities, saying the faith deviated from Islamic teaching.

Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) is known for its moderate stance.

Religious Affairs Minister Suryadharma Ali on Friday called on Ahmadiyah apostate to Islamic teaching and urged them to halt propagating their beliefs, although he warned the public against resorting to violence in dealing with the issue.

Reports said that calm has returned to the village but there remained a heavy security presence with hundreds of police personnel patrolling the area, notably the main entrance to the village.

Manis Lor is home to the largest Muhammadiyah community in the country with 3,000 of the 4,350 villagers following the faith. (dar)
