The word of jihad voiced by NU founding father Hadratus Sheikh KH Hasyim Asy'ari (Mbah Hasyim) in the Jihad Resolution on 22 October 1945 that triggered the Heroes "10 November" Day event is absolutely not the same as that screamed by Muslim militants like Amrozi et al.

"Jihad in the sense of physical and military confrontation should be placed within a broader social system," said chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) Fajrul Falakh on the sidelines of a seminar taking up issues on jihad and heroism.<>

Fajrul said the NU jihad voiced by Mbah Hasyim through its Resolution Jihad and was reaffirmed at its 1946 congress was the resolution of NU towards an elected government. The NU Jihad Resolution was the effort to uphold the nation's sovereignty.

"Jihad within NU has not only related to the interest of one group, but it has also related to the one of other broader social communities," he said.

The Gajah Mada University's prominent intellectual added, the jihad should not be related to physical and military confrontation.

Fajrul was of view that people had so far understood the term of jihad on war and armed violence.

In the meantime, Fajrul also stressed the importance of understanding jihad in the sense of respecting other rights and struggling for social justice. (nam)
