"We will issue such recommendations to all parties to maintain religion and won't allow it to be hijacked in the name of terrorism," chairman of the Recommendation Commission, KH Masykuri Abdillah at a press conference here on Friday.

Masykuri asserted that efforts to eradicate terrorism acts could be conducted through cultural and ideological approaches like straightening out any possible misconception about Islam.

"Islam is not terrorism, jihad is also not terrorism. However, because the terrorism has (most of the time) used religious justifications, NU recommends the government to expectedly change the legal status of anti-terrorism desk to such a special board," he said.

The anti-terrorism special board, Masykuri added, in addition to involving legal and security officials, would also involve civilians or religious leaders.

"In addition to stemming terrorism through cultural and ideological steps, another thing important to be used id by using physical steps like launching military attacks as that carried out by the Special Detachment (88) recently," he said.

Masykuri said that actually NU had so far prevented its individuals from doing radicalism, fundamentalism and terrorism acts.

"Not only have the problems been discussed in the Recommendation Commission, they have also been dIscussed in the Program Commission. We call on the government, political parties, mass organizations and people to stem all this," he said.

"NU has again taken measures in preventing its followers from doing any radicalism acts and explaining the importance of having tolerant and moderate religious understandings to other parties, including other countries by, at this point, involving them in various activities organized the NU-initiated International Conference of Islamic Scholars (ICIS)," Masykuri said.

In addition to taking up issues on terrorism, Masykuri added, his commission also took up issues on religious understanding and religious organizations.

In regard with the renewal of religious thought, he said, NU through its national meeting in Cilacap, Central Java, had introduced any possible renewal of religious thought but it should be under the frame of Ahlussunnah wal Jamaah (Aswaja). (dar)
