The United Development Party (PPP) has barred its lawmakers at the House of Representatives from supporting a petition requesting the legislative body to exercise its initiative right to ask the Constitutional Court to unseat Vice President Boediono.
PPP secretary general Irgan Chairul Mahfiz said Friday the party’s central board would take actions against any PPP lawmaker who signed the petition.r />
“We have instructed all the party lawmakers not to support the petition,” Irgan said. “Those who violate the order will have to face questioning and later punishment.”
Irgan would not unveil the forms of sanction, saying they would be discussed by the party executives further.
In the aftermath of the House’s inquiry into the Bank Century bailout, five legislators from five different parties, set in motion a move to impeach Boediono for his role as then the Bank Indonesia governor in the controversial policy.
A signatory of the petition, Bambang Soesatyo of the Golkar Party, said 106 lawmakers had supported the move.
The Muslim-based PPP is part of the ruling coalition, but Irgan said the ban had nothing to do with the political alliance. “There are many principles problems that we have to cope with other then the Century case,” Irgan said. (jp/dar)
