The Indonesian government strongly ridicules Israel for ignoring international calls to stop its excavations near Magharba Gate, one of Al Aqsa Mosque’s gates in Jerusalem, Indonesian Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesman Kristiarto Legowo said here on Monday.
"Indonesia ridicules in the strongest terms Israel’s attitude in ignoring the calls from Muslim communities around the world to stop its activity because it will create new tensions in the Middle East," Kristiarto said as quoted by Antara news agency.<>
The Indonesian delegations to the United Nations, the Non-aligned Movement and the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) had therefore urged UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the UN Security Council president to call on Israel to stop the excavations, he said.
Earlier, on Friday, Foreign Affairs Minister Hassan Wirayuda had said Indonesia deplored the excavation work being done by Israel under the mosque in Jerusalem to build a tunnel.
Speaking to the press at his office here, Wirayuda said, "Indonesia calls on Israel to stop the excavation work. As it is being done in an archeological area, the excavation is likely to disturb the current process of dialogues to achieve peace in the Middle East."
Meanwhile, an IINA report from Jerusalem said the excavations would continue on Monday despite Palestinian and Islamic opposition and clashes between Palestinian young men and Israeli police.
Clashes broke out on Friday when Israel began construction work at a ramp outside the gate, saying it intended to build a new passageway.
But Palestinian and Arab officials said the construction work was part of a scheme aimed at altering the genuine identity of the holy city.
According to Reuters, Israel’s cabinet decided on Sunday to press ahead with archaeological digging outside Jerusalem’s most contentious religious site despite Arab protests.
It said Arab leaders and Muslim clerics had charged the excavations could damage the foundations of the 1300-year-old mosque, a charge Israeli officials said was politically motivated. (dar)
