Thousands of Muslims in Surakarta, or locally known as Solo, in Central Java, held a peaceful demonstration calling for an immediate dissolution of Islamic sect Ahmadiyah.

The rally took place in North Keraton, Surakarta, on Sunday (3/8), and included speeches by a number of prominent figures, including Chairman of the Indonesian Council of Ulemas KH Ma'ruf Amin and Chairman of the Moslem Front Lawyers team (TPM) Mahendratta.<>

Ma'ruf said Ahmadiyah should be disbanded or declare itself as lying outside of Islam.

"Ahmadiyah sect is really misleading if it is still a part of Islam. The assessment does not only come from the Indonesian Council of Ulemas but also other countries," he said.

A call for Ahmadiyah's dissolution was made by Chairman of the Moslem Front Lawyers Team Mahendradatta, who said the sect was contrary to a number of basic principles of Islam.

"Just open (its book) and read the basic principle of the sect. It is written that Ahmadiyah believers are tasked with spreading the teachings of their leader Mirza Ghulam Ahmad," said Mahendradatta.

A joint ministerial decree banning Ahmadiyah from spreading its teachings was insufficient, he said.

A few months ago, Religious Minister Maftuh Basyuni said the government had banned the spread of Ahmadiyah in Indonesia, citing that the sect went against Islamic teachings.

"Ahmadiyah was already banned by the government a long time ago, because its teachings go against the main religious tenets of Islam," the minister said.

He said Islam only recognized one God and embraced the teachings of Prophet Muhammad SAW. Ahmadiyah embraces Mirza Ghulam Ahmad as its prophet.

"If Ahmadiyah claims its teachings to not be a part of Islam, there will be no problem. But if it continues to claim its teachings are a part of Islam, it is totally unjustified," Maftuh said.

However, Mahfud said it was the jurisdiction of the Attorney General's Office to take measures against the sect.

The President has also endorsed the banning of the sect from spreading its teachings.

People are not allowed to take the law into their own hands and commit anarchy or violence against Ahamdiyah, the minister said, adding that as a multicultural nation the teachings of each religion and religious differences should be seen as natural and as a positive reflection on human nature.

Religious conflict will never create a conducive condition for the stability and development of the state and therefore it needs to be handled seriously, he said.

In return, religious tolerance should be eternally preserved, he added. (jp/dar)
