Japan invites an average of 12 young Moslem clerics from Indonesia to Tokyo every year in a program to cultivate harmonious relations between the two countries, a Japanese official said.
The program to invite pesantren (Moslem boarding school) teachers to Tokyo had been going on for the past six years, according to Japanese Ambassador to Indonesia Kojiro Shojiri as quoted by a Japanese embassy official, Atsushi Sano, in a statement to Antara on Tuesday.&<>lt;br />
"As per last year, we have invited a total of 59 kiai (Moslem clerics) to Tokyo and this year we are to invite 12 more," Atsushi said.
He said the program would hopefully be of mutual benefit, namely enhance harmonious relations and mutual understanding between the two peoples.
Within a global context, he said, Indonesia was a strategic partner of Japan considering the former`s position as the country with the largest Muslim population in the world and as one of the world`s most populous countries.
"We want to build better relations and greater mutual understanding with Indonesia," he said.
Therefore, the Japanese embassy had often involved pesantren in its various programs. Pesantren were an educational institution typical of Indonesia that had strong roots in its society and possessing great independence.
"Pesantren reflect the strength of Indonesia`s civil society. We hope pesentren will continue to exist and survive amid the onslaught of globalization. Therefore, we regularly invite pesantren teachers to Tokyo to get new experiences which they can bring back to further develop pesantren," Atshushi said. (dar)
