The relationship between people and political party

NU Online  ·  Jumat, 9 Januari 2009 | 09:44 WIB

Liberal democracy that brought many problems during the 1850s has now been readopted by the state as the most ideal political system. The first matter is not to do with the nature of multi-party democracy in which every person regardless of their clear aims and purposes deserves to establish a political party. Though they are in the same stand and ideology, they tend to establish their own political organization. Even from a party whose the same ideology, because they are worried about their short-term interest, they, again and again, would establish their own party.

In the liberal system, people no longer think about collectiveness instead of thinking about ideology. They would do whatever they want so that they can easily establish their own party without considering the importance of its aims and objectives. At this point, political parties have been regarded work places promising enormous benefits. That is why the establishment of a party is commonly driven by such willingness rather than manifestation of the people's struggle in building a better nation/state.<>

For pragmatic society as a result of the liberal democracy, thinking about the nation, state and even political affairs is too abstract. The most concrete for this group is their own interest. For that reason, the struggle for the nation and state is commonly considered irrelevant. All this is a dream of people knowing nothing. Personal interest is more focused than the collective one.

In such social circumstances, when the government decides political parties have no power to determine their legislative hopefuls and all this is subject to voters, there would be a totally liberalization of political party leading in turn to the individualization of party. As a consequence, people do not have to devote themselves to a political party in pursuing their career. Instead, it is enough for them to install political banners on street corners that explain their identity and achievements.

The season for campaign like this has generally been used by legislative hopefuls to improve their self-image as the most pious people, sensitive, brilliant and so on. While such matters as experience and achievement are not part of the process in pursuing career. So they themselves affirm it is time to care about people. It means that the care is seasonal only. After elections are over there would no longer be such season to caring about people.

All this can been seen as the people have been exiled and inundated by imported products, farmers have been exploited with any burdening tax while at the same time the House of Representatives has not paid more attention and even passed any bill capable of oppressing and exploiting them. The worst democratic system would, of course, produce bad politicians. They have no attention to their people and party. Rather, they tend to serve their own interest. They have no time to think about people instead of the nation with all its big and complicated problems.

It is now time to have a stable political system with limited political parties which have quality. In turn there would be qualified leaders along with the mechanism of cadre recruitment and well regulated and structured selection. If the liberal democracy is still implemented the nation would result in chaos, the government is paralyzed and people tend to increasingly be anarchic.

Unfortunately, there have been no any trying to reject or at least reorganize this system because they would be regarded as anti-democracy. Further more, democracy has been considered as the only 'religion' in the world so that there would be no individuals whose the courage to take a stand against the democratic tyranny. Whereas, democracy has been a means to conquer and dominate and at the same time there have been many considering it as a freeing political system. People have for long time been fooled and even defrauded by the propaganda of the democracy so that they have had no such awareness and critical thinking in understanding democracy in a true sense.

By implementing the old-styled liberal democracy those pretending to place individual freedom as the highest virtue tend to ignore the importance of norms and rules. Even the government has not yet been capable of implementing its own settled regulations. It is defeated by such confusing circumstances in the name of individual freedom brought by the liberal democracy. (Abdul Mun’im DZ)
