The Recommendation Commission of the 2021 NU National Conference of Alim Ulama (Munas) and the Grand Conference (Konbes) urged the government to pay more attention to the implementation of education in 3T (outermost, foremost, underdeveloped) regions, especially regarding online learning methods.

The Secretary of the Munas-Konbes, M Kholid Syeirazi, made the remarks following the results of the decision at the plenary meeting of the commission's ratification, at the Grand Sahid Jaya Hotel, Jakarta, on Sunday (26/9/2021).

He emphasized that the government must immediately regulate online education into a legal-formal one. This is because online learning methods would continue even after the Covid-19 pandemic is over.

“This has to be a new educational design. Therefore, the government must regulate the online education system. There is an emphasis that the government pays attention to online education in the 3T regions," said Kholid accompanied by the Chairman of the Recommendation Commission, HZ Arifin Junaidi, Rais 'Aam PBNU KH Miftachul Akhyar, and Rais Syuriyah PBNU KH Ahmad Ishomuddin.

In addition, the government also needs to ensure that the rights of students to quality education are maintained in the pandemic era, by providing distance learning support facilities (PJJ) throughout Indonesia. Virtual learning needs to be adapted as a combination of face-to-face learning in future educational scenarios.

The basis of the encouragement to the government to pay attention to online education in the 3T regions is based on Article 4 of Law Number 20 of 2003 concerning the National Education System (Sisdiknas) which mandates that education should be held in a democratic and fair manner, and not discriminatory.

Therefore, the government is also asked not to discriminate against community-initiated education units with minimal students. On the other hand, the government should affirm such education units which are generally located in 3T regions, with the necessary support, including funding.

“The government should foster and empower the education units. It's not even deadly by requiring students to join other educational units, which are not impossible for students to reach," he said.

"In turn, students (can) drop out of school and do not get their rights to education as mandated by the 1945 Constitution," said Kholid while reading the decisions of the Recommendation Commission hearing.

Character education

The recommendation Commission of the Munas-Konbes considers that the digitalization of the education system could not be avoided as a consequence of the industrial revolution 4.0. Because the digital era provides easy access to additional knowledge and skills.

However, if the digitization is not balanced with character education, education will lose its spirit to create religious, nationalist, honest, patriotic, tolerant, disciplined, hard-working, creative, independent individuals, appreciate achievements, communicative, love peace, care for the environment, sensitive, and responsible.

Education as a process of transferring knowledge and skills must go hand in hand with character cultivation. Therefore, the Recommendation Commission also views that the role of teachers, educators, clerics (kiai), and religious teachers (ustadz), remains important in the educational process that cannot be replaced by computers or electronic devices.

The draft recommendation team agreed that the essence of education is to prepare students to actively develop their potential in all aspects needed to build society, nation and state.
