East Java’s NU clerics urge govt to settle emergency status

Numbers of East Java’s NU clerics have really got upset over the indolence of the government to handle The site of the mudflow disaster in Porong, Sidoarjo, East Java. Several days ago they met the vice president Jusuf Kalla reporting the disaster. They also met members of House of Representatives here on Monday (4/9) to urge the government to settle such emergency situation in the mudflow-inundated areas.

“It’s not important to debate whether (the mudflow) would be diverted to sea or where. The important thing is that the people should be saved following the rainy season ahead,” said Chairman of East Java’s Nahdlatul Ulama regional board Ali Maschan Moesa.

<>The presence of the NU clerics were welcomed by vice chairman of the National Awakening Faction (FKB) of House of Representatives and Ario Wijanarko.

According to Maschan, the emergency status should have been taken up through presidential decree and appointed a chairman responsible for the disaster and capable of handling social problems in the site of the mudflow.

At the same time, Ali said that Lapindo should have fully compensate people for their losses. He also promised to support the strategic measures taken by the clerics.

Incessant mudflows coming out of the leakage in Lapindo Brantas Inc.`s gas drilling well has been going on since May 29.

The mudflows covered thousands of houses, tens of school buildings and at least 15 factories and prompted the evacuation of around 9,000 people. (rif)
