Gus Dur: If still full of doubt, no need to build a nuclear power plant

If doubts are still surrounding the government plan to build a nuclear power plant in Indonesia, it would be better to abandon the project, former president says.
The remark was made by former President Abdurahman "Gus Dur" Wahid in Kudus Thursday evening who said that he once supported the supply of a nuclear reactor to Indonesia, but not now.<>
The reason was that the impact of the Chernobyl tragedy was still felt till now. "I am worried that if the tragedy also happens in with the nuclear power plant is to be built in the Muria peninsula."
Earlier, he admitted that he once received some high ranking officials of the National Atomic Agency who said that a nuclear power plant in Muria peninsula is quite safe.
But I also received information that the Muria area was prone to quakes. "This will cause doubts and suspicion," Gus Dur was quoted by Antara news agency as saying.
In addition, the area to be used for the project covered 90 hectares. But lately it was said that it needs only 20 hectare of land.
Gus Dur also said that he was once invited to join an action to reject nuclear power plants in some regions. But his side could not meet their invitation as he had to undergo a medical check-up. "At least, three times a week I had a dialysis." (dar)
