Vice Rector of the Jakarta’s State Islamic University Syarif Hidayatullah Prof Dr Masykuri Abdillah said the status of Nahdlatul Ulama Teachers Organization (Pergunu) should be reconsidered as one of Nahdlatul Ulama autonomous bodies. He then expected it to be such ideally an independent association.

He said the existence of the association was now really important especially for the teachers of NU Maarif educational institutions because of the demand of Teachers and Lecturers’ Bill.

<>“The Teachers and Lecturers’ Bill requires such certification proposed by the profession organization. That’s why it’s better if they have their own association,” he said.

The chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) took the existence of syariah advocate association for instance. This has so far helped alumni of the faculty of syariah if they want to be lawyers.

He also said his views dealt with the status of the teachers’ organization was a merely public-made discourse that needs to be taken into account in formulating the best status of the Pergunu. “The proposal needs to be discussed further,” he said. (mkf)
