The country’s largest Muslim organization, Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) urged here on Tuesday (5/9) the government to immediately divert Lapindo huge and hot mudflow pouring out of an exploratory oil well to sea.

General Chairman of the Central Board of Nahdlatul Ulama, KH Hasyim Muzadi expected the authorities to be tough in taking necessary actions to avoid a major disaster and also must be transparent in giving locals accurate information on the mudflow.

<>“It’s necessary for the government to be tough in taking actions. We can not take the actions without any risk. So, we need to take the little risk of the actions. The Lapindo mudflow must be channeled into the sea through Porong River,” Hasyim told NU Online at the PBNU Building, Jalan Kramat Raya, Jakarta.

According to Hasyim the hot mud spewing out of the company's mining site will generate a major disaster on the eve of the rainy season; mudflow will swamp all surrounding densely populated areas, including the turnpike network.

Authorities have been struggling for more than two months to plug the leak near the well just south of Indonesia's second city of Surabaya. The noxious mud flow has displaced about 8 000 people from their homes. (rif)
