The United Development Party announced on Tuesday that it would hold its national congress to choose a new leader in June — six months ahead of schedule — to give it more time to prepare for the 2014 elections.

Hundreds of senior officials from the Islam-based party, also known as the PPP, met at a Central Jakarta hotel to discuss the plan, as well as the party’s stance on the Ahmadiyah and issues surrounding the government coalition.r />
Suryadharma Ali, the minister for religious affairs and PPP’s secretary general, said the national congress was originally scheduled for February 2012 but would now take place on June 11 this year.

“In the meeting we reviewed the party’s branches’ preparations for the national congress,” he said as quoted by the Jakarta Globe. “We hope all preparations will be finished by April.”

The discussions would also be continued at a regional meeting in Bengkulu, he said.

Regarding his intention to run again for the party chairmanship, Suryadharma said he would make his decision next month.

“If I decide to run again, I will make a statement in April,” he said, acknowledging he had been surveying the party’s branches to determine his level of support.

Party members have speculated at least two candidates could challenge Suryadharma to lead the party: Ahmad Muqowam, a senior PPP lawmaker, and Muchdi Purwoprandjono, a former National Intelligence Agency (BIN) official and former member of the Great Indonesian Movement Party (Gerindra). He was earlier acquitted of the murder of activist Munir Said Thalib.

Muchdi left Gerindra in February to join PPP. Rumors at the time suggested he planned to nominate himself for the chairmanship, although he has yet to make a statement on the matter.

On Ahmadiyah, Suryadharma said the PPP’s regional branches had demanded the party leadership urge the government to ban the minority sect.

“Our grassroots members have made such a call on several occasions,” he said. “I think we will affirm the commitment during these meetings,” he said.

Suryadharma said the party would also discuss whether it would remain part of the government coalition after 2014. (dar)
