Venezuelan Foreign Minister Ali Rodriguez highlighted the significance of Russian support to Venezuela Thursday, in its bid to become a member of the UN Security Council.

The support of Russian President Vladimir Putin to our country, Rodriguez told Venezolana de Television, is one more success for the Venezuelan government to accede to a position on the UN Security Council.

Rodriguez recalled that the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) was the first to show its support to Venezuela, and the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) has also come out in favor.

Other countries have also expressed their support individually and openly, and Rodriguez said this will increase, so that the Venezuelan government is very optimistic regarding the final result.

Rodriguez also said there is no legal basis for US opposition to Russia´s sale of military arms and materiel to Venezuela.
The US is one of the main weapons sellers in the world, so if Venezuela wants to reinforce its military power to guarantee its sovereignty and integrity, this is a legal and legitimate action, as for any other country, he stated.

The foreign minister replied to a question of his possible replacement for health reasons, that only Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez appoints ministers in the Venezuelan government, so he is the one who could answer such a question. (pl/dar)
