US to declare Iranian revolutionary guard a terrorist group

The United States government intends to take action to formally label the Iranian Revolutionary Guard as a foreign terrorist organization, the Washington Post reported Wednesday.
Citing unnamed government officials speaking on condition of anonymity, the newspaper said that US President George W Bush`s administration has made the decision to act against the Revolutionary Guard in an attempt to disrupt the elite military wing`s finances.<>
Washington has accused units within the Revolutionary guard of aiding Shiite Muslim militias and other insurgent groups within Iraq, including smuggling specialized landmines used to targeted armoured vehicles carrying US troops.
Tensions between Washington and Tehran have risen amid a continuing confrontation over the Iranian nuclear programme, which the US alleges is aimed at building weapons.
No state military unit has been previously designated by the United States as a terrorist organization, DPA reported. (dar)
