Thousands of members of Nahdlatul Wathon, the largest Muslim organization in West Nusa Tenggara province, attend its 71st anniversary in Pancor district, some 100 kilometers east of the provincial capital city of Mataram on Sunday (27/8).

The celebration was also attended by a number of Cabinet ministers, including Education Minister Bambang Soedibyo and Forestry Minister M.S. Kaban.

<>Opened by the organization's charismatic leader Tuan Guru K.H. M Zainul Madjdi, the event involved various religious and social activities.

Established in l935, Nahdlatul Wathon has been at the forefront of the province's efforts to provide education for all. Currently, it runs around 700 Islamic boarding schools and universities in the province and other provinces across the country.

The province, however, is one of the country's poorest. One of the organization's missions is to help locals gain access to education and employment. (tjp/dar)
